October fire in Newberry, August fire in Old Lycoming Township both ruled accidental

The house fire at 2224 Newberry St. that displaced a mother and her teenage daughter on Oct. 30 started in the kitchen and has been ruled accidental, according to city fire officials.

Damage to the home was estimated at $25,000, officials added.

One of two dogs perished in the fire.

Concerning another investigation, Old Lycoming Township fire officials have ruled the cause of the Aug. 31 fire that damaged a second-floor apartment above Harder Sporting Goods at 2098 Lycoming Creek Road accidental as well.

Joseph Hope, deputy fire chief for the township, said the fire, which resulted in about $30,000 damage, was caused by careless smoking.
