Man trapped under farm tractor for nearly an hour in Lairdsville

LAIRDSVILLE — A man believed to be in his 20s was flown to a trauma center to get treated for injuries he suffered Friday morning when the farm tractor he was on went down a 40-foot embankment and overturned, trapping him underneath the piece of equipment for nearly an hour, according to Lairdsville Fire Chief William Gordner.

“He’s very lucky to be alive,” Gordner said shortly after returning from the 300 block of Magargel Lane in Franklin Township, where firefighters and paramedics were dispatched about 10:10 a.m.

The tractor landed on top of the victim, landing in a small stream that was less than two-feet deep, Gordner said, adding that the man, from the Millville area, remained conscious and was able to keep his head above the water while volunteer firefighters from here, Unityville, Hughesville and Muncy Area worked to free him.

Airbags were used to lift the tractor off the man, who was unloading it off a trailer when the brakes suddenly gave out, Gordner said he was told.

Once firefighters pulled him out from under the tractor, he was put on a backboard and placed in a utility task vehicle that took him 75 yards to Moreland Baptist Road, where he was placed in the back of Hughesville’s ambulance, which then took him to Carl G. Renn Elementary School.

From there, firefighters carried him to a helicopter that flew him to Geisinger Medical Center, Danville. There was no word on his medical condition.

Starting at $2.99/week.
