Homeless man locked up on assault-related charges

During an argument in a Loyalsock Township motel room on July 11, Matthew Scott Bathurst punched the female acquaintance in the face, picked her up by her throat, threw her on the bed and began choking her with both his hands, it was alleged in a state police affidavit. The woman told police that she “blacked out because of her inability to breathe” it was stated in the court document.

The next day, Bathurst, a 37-year-old homeless man who had been staying with the woman at her motel room, “threatened to kill her in her sleep by beating her with a metal pipe,” it was alleged in the affidavit.

Arraigned before District Judge Kirsten Gardner on charges of strangulation, terroristic threats, simple assault and harassment, Bathurst, who admitted during his arraignment that he battles with addictions to methamphetamine as well as marijuana and alcohol, was jailed in lieu of $35,000 bail.

Following a preliminary hearing Monday, he was held for court on all the charges.

Starting at $2.99/week.
