Corter’s Flooring America thriving through pandemic

By JONATHAN BERGMUELLER 2 min read

Corter's Flooring America is entering its 48th year of business and thriving in the middle of a pandemic.

The Sun-Gazette Readers' Choice Award-winning Corter's, located at 2005 Lycoming Creek Road, Williamsport, has your floor covered by specializing in carpets, hardwood, luxury vinyl tile and ceramic tile, according to James Fink, one of the co-owners.

However, Shane Corter, the other co-owner, said the business's success boils down to customer service. Corter said the business thrives on "responding to customers in a timely manner and doing what you say you're going to do."

Through the years, Corter's has enlarged its operations with building expansions and remodels.

Corter's operated independently until around 25 years ago, when it joined "Flooring America." Corter's is still an independent business that provides the same advantages of quality, local service.

However, with Flooring America, Corter's can leverage a greater buying power to compete with bigger brand-name businesses. For customers, that means high-quality local work at a comfortable price.

"We offer the service that for (brand stores), it is hard to duplicate," Fink said.

With the buying power of Flooring America, Corter's can fill its shop with a wide variety of selections in addition to keeping up with the latest trends in flooring color and design.

The employees at Corter's are all veteran flooring technicians, according to Fink. Fink, who first started working at the business when he was 16, has had ample time to grow and develop his expertise.

The same goes for his colleagues -- with the exception of a younger hire, Corter's talent pool are all well-trained and experienced technicians and installers. The group boasts a collective 220 years of experience -- meaning they know their flooring.

Corter's was originally founded by Gary Corter and William Fink, and their families still successfully co-own the business.

Although many businesses were devastated by the COVID-19 pandemic, Fink said Corter's has enjoyed some success.

Because area residents are staying inside their homes more now than ever, they are looking around at ways to spruce up their homes. That manifests into business for Corter's, Fink and Corter said.

"People are prioritizing investing in their homes," Fink said. "We've been on the home-improvement wagon."
