Strong work ethic keeps Kauffman’s Store growing

LOGANTON — Kauffman’s Store in Loganton was first opened in 1974 when Amos and Anna Kauffman moved from their home in Lancaster County to Sugar Valley, where their business would continue to thrive and grow over the next 46 years.

The family first opened up for business about one mile west of Loganton next to Schrack’s Dairy Farm, where they began making handmade harnesses for horses. Eventually the store began carrying a small amount of footwear and household items and in 1977, they expanded their store to include shoes, boots and footwear.

Two more additions were added over the next 10 years to enlarge the harness and tool inventory and a growing footwear department. Through mostly word of mouth, the shop gained popularity rather quickly and was even popular with visitors from other states.

In 2000, the store moved to their current location of 22 Meadow Lane in Loganton, and today, 20 years later, business is still flourishing, although they’ve come a long way from the small trailer of 1974.

In 2021 Kauffman’s is an impressive 11,000 square feet in size, and in addition to their tools and footwear, carry just about anything that you might need to tackle any farm or household job. Equine supplies, leather belts and purses, plumbing hardware, and high quality paint – including Valspar — are just a few of the things that can be found at Kauffman’s. They carry name brand sneakers and shoes in names like Sketchers, New Balance and Clarks, as well as Muck boots, and cowboy and steel-toed work boots and athletic shoes, in wide and extra wide sizes.

Two times a year Kauffman’s Store holds three-day Tent Sales where customers are offered discounts on shoes, boots and some hardware under a large white tent in the parking lot. The next tent sale at Kauffman’s is scheduled for June 3, 4, and 5, during the Loganton yard sales. In addition to the Tent Sale, Kauffman’s will also be having a customer appreciation sale April 8, 9, and 10, with 10 percent off store wide.

Amos passed away in 2002, but Anna is still a very strong presence at the store, and while Amos might be physically gone, he can be seen in the faces of ancestors who all share in strong work ethics. His sons, Sam and Omar, are the managers at the store, and they along with some of their siblings and their own wives and kids, are always very present at the shop and often visitors will be greeted by at least one of them when they come to the store. This kind of personal treatment, combined with in-stock, high quality items, keep Kauffman’s at the top of the list in popularity.

The Kauffman family’s role expands farther than the doors of their store.

Kauffman’s Store is the place where you can find all of your footwear, housewares, equine and hardware needs.

Meanwhile, the store reports ongoing inventory shortages and delays as a result of COVID-19, conditions that are out of the store’s control. Your continued patience and support are greatly appreciated, the owners said.
