Ye Olde Cycle Barn: For those who like their ‘toys’

KAREN VIBERT-KENNEDY/ Sun-Gazette Christian Krisher, a mechanic and service technician at Ye Olde Cycle Barn, works besides Bob Reber, chief mechanic in the service shop.

HUGHESVILLE — It is time to get outside and have some fun.

That is what Bob McCormick, chief financial officer, said along with the sales team at Ye Olde Cycle Barn, 700 Route 405 in this borough.

The store is owned by Bob’s son, Brian McCormick.

Spring felt as though it had arrived and the sun was shining in on the packed showroom.

It was filled with all-terrain vehicles — some equipped for utilitarian purposes such as plowing snow and towing trailers.

Also in the display area on a hardwood floor that once was a skating rink were snowmobiles, accessories such as helmets and gloves and stacked canisters of Sunoco unleaded and leaded racing fuel.

Ye Olde Cycle Barn is a specialty store for those who want to hit the trails of north-central Pennsylvania, or get some heavy-duty work done at their residences.

“We feel pretty good about the year ahead,” McCormick said, recalling a year before when COVID-19 struck at the heart of small businesses throughout Pennsylvania.

For the family owned business which depends and likes to see walk-ins and browsers, 2021 has restored hope with vaccines for the virus.

“I got both of mine,” McCormick said.

Over the past year, sales were kept going by the loyal customer base, McCormick said.

The payroll protection plan provided loans for his small business to make their way through the challenging times.

For the first two weeks after Gov. Tom Wolf ordered a shut down, the business closed as required. Then, it was able to open for service and parts only, McCormick said.

Bryan Sorce, general manager, said he was hoping for a stronger rebound of sales this year. The store is adding a “seventh” employee in a few days.

The team sees clientele from all walks of life who browse. Ye Olde Cycle Barn specializes in sales and full service of the following product lines: Arctic Cat snowmobiles, all-terrain vehicles, and side-by-side vehicles; Suzuki motorcycles (on and off road) all-terrain vehicles; Yamaha snowmobiles and Full Line Haulmark trailers, vintage trailers and Sport Haven trailers.

Just because the store is located in a smaller borough doesn’t mean it isn’t reaching a wide audience.

“We’re number three in volume across the Northeast and parts of Canada,” McCormick said. “The store ranks third in sales of Arctic Cat snowmobiles, all-terrain vehicles and side-by-side vehicles,” he said.

A significant portion of sales is four-wheelers, including customized vehicles for mowing, plowing snow and pulling trailers.

The store has all sizes and styles of trailers, too, from small open utility units to custom race trailers and in between, he said.

What is unique is the full-service mechancial shop is right next to the display area.

The history of the store is unique. McCormick purchased it from Mark Sones in December, 1997.

Ye Olde Cycle Barn was found in 1966 by Larue “Sonny” Sones and BSA motorcycle dealership on route 220 in Hughesville.

In 1984, Sonny’s son, Mark, took over the reins, adding KTM cycles in 1985.

In 1987, the business was moved to its present location on the Hughesville-Muncy corridor.

Before Sones started the business, the property had been a skating rink — initially called Falls Hall and later Country Skate Land.

Bank financing and extended warranties are available.

The store is open 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. It is open 8:30 a.m. to noon Saturday and closed Wednesday and Sunday, McCormick said.

“Browsers are always welcome,” he said. Customers are encouraged to stop in and check out the various product lines.

Starting at $2.99/week.
