Local doctors Dr. Jason Shu, MD, National Center on Minority Health adviser, and Dr. Grace Shu, MD, PhD, U.S. Public Health Service adviser, were heartbroken recently when they learned of the tragic death of Angela Chao, 50 years old, youngest sister of Elaine Chao, who served as former Labor Secretary under President George W. Bush and Transportation Secretary under President Donald J. Trump. Both Doctors Shu are long-time friends with Ms. Chao’s father, James Chao, who at 96 years old is the co-founder, and retired head of the Foremost Group shipping company, based in New York. Angela Chao, who earned her MBA degree from Harvard Univ. with honors, served as Foremost Group’s chief executive. “I cannot imagine James Chao’s grief and pain,” said Dr. Jason Shu. “In 2007 he lost his lovely wife, Ruth, to lymphoma, and now to lose his youngest daughter who was so brilliant, warm, and kind, it’s very sad.” In 2012, Angela Chao married Jim Breyer and during the pandemic moved to Austin, Texas, from Manhattan to start a new life. “We extend our deepest sympathies and support to the entire Chao family. It’s good that nothing criminal happened to Angela, that it was an accident. It does show that no matter how much money or power someone has, they can still die from an accident.” Dr. Grace Shu said. “We will always keep Angela’s memory in our hearts, and I hope her family finds comfort that many people whom she touched over the years also will do so.”
