Shoppe on Broad ‘excited to welcome new regulars’

As the Shoppe on Broad celebrates a little over a year since opening, owners Christy Sherwood and Rilissa Nettling look back on how it all began.
"We were two best friends who love to roam and shop," Sherwood said.
After visiting Jim Thorpe and seeing the variety of unique small-shops the town had to offer, the pair began to create a vision for what they wanted to do.
"We knew we wanted that on Broad Street, in Montoursville," Nettling said. "We stepped out in faith and when the opportunity opened right away we prayed about it. We knew we had to join the Broad Street crew. Broad Street has some fantastic shops and eateries and we wanted to add to the experience. "
The shop, at 346 Broad St., Montoursville, officially opened in March of 2022 and has become a culmination of all of the things Sherwood and Nettling loved about shopping in the area.
"The Shoppe on Broad is a blast from the past nowadays," the pair said. "It is Hallmark and Fashion Bug with Christian Bookstore and TJ Maxx all rolled into one. It's a place to relax, renew, and get some ideas and great gift ideas, along with a fantastic outfit."
The business is family owned, with best friends, children, and grandchildren all working together, all rooted in a Montoursville identity.
"We are Montoursvillians and our children were all raised here," Sherwood said. "Being in the heart of small-town Pennsylvania does something to the soul. We truly love our neighbors and hope to be an asset, as they are a true asset to us. We love the daily conversations and visits from our regulars and locals. You haven't experienced small town life until you have a visit from your local Bob Lee and Aaron Miller."
Although there are daily challenges and drastic changes to the economy and retail, the Shoppe prides itself on a solid relationship with the local community.
"We absolutely love our private, local talent," both Sherwood and Nettling said. "Right now, we have a couple that are truly talented with their beautiful jewelry and candles. Our clothing line is something we are proud of because it reflects what we love: comfort, casual, and just plain pretty. We really strive to purchase items made in the USA."
Faith plays a big part in what the pair are doing and what they offer customers. "That's the other thing that brings us comfort daily is our own personal walks of faith," Nettling said. "The books and devotions we offer can really aid anyone in their daily faith walk."
As the shop celebrates and year and begins getting out the "new" phase, Nettling and Sherwood have new ideas that would open up opportunities for artists to showcase their work.
"This would open up to neighbors and friends to have a home to showcase their talents and possibly make some extra money. This is the planning stage, and we are excited to open it up to the community soon."
The Shoppe on Broad is closed with appointments only on Sunday and Monday. They are open at 10 a.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
