Memorial service marks 50th anniversary of Flight 40 crash

BLOSSBURG -- It was 50 years ago this week that Mohawk Airlines Flight 40 crashed on Bloss Mountain, claiming the lives of all 34 people on board. To commemorate the event, a memorial service is planned for Friday.

The service will be from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at Island Park, where plans are in the works for a permanent stone monument, according to Roger Tracey, a spokesman for the event.

The monument will provide a brief history and list the names of the victims of the 1967 crash, he said.

Expected to attend are Tioga County commissioners, emergency services, the Blossburg mayor, state police, officials with the Federal Aviation Administration and the Civil Air Patrol.

A representative from Ward Manufacturing will be recognized during the event as a contributor to the monument project. The company was a leading donor that made it possible for the monument to be ordered, Tracey said.
