PHILIP A. HOLMES/Sun-Gazette Police investigate the scene of a homicide Sunday night on Poco Farm Road in Loyalsock Township.

A 25-year-old man was found shot to death Sunday night along Poco Farm Road in Loyalsock Township, according to state police and the county's Chief Deputy County Coroner Jerold Ross.

The body was discovered about 7:30 p.m. along the east berm near where Poco Farm Road intersects with the lower end of Poco Farm Road Extension.

Paramedics were dispatched to the scene for a person down with unknown details. A fire officer called for police when it was learned that the man had suffered an apparent gunshot wound.

"He was found along the edge of the road," Ross said.

When asked where in the body the victim was shot, Ross replied "I"m not releasing that. This is a police investigation."

Paramedics got a slight pulse and worked on the victim, but Ross pronounced him dead at the scene.

Investigators have determined the man's identity, but it was not expected to be released until later today at the earliest.

Investigators said a passerby saw the body and went to a nearby home to call 911.

The section of Poco Farm Road was immediately closed as at least a dozen state troopers began an extensive investigation, trying to determine any leads as to who might have shot the man.

Lt. Sherman Shadle, a supervisor in the criminal investigation division at the Montoursville barracks, arrived on the scene to take charge.

From the scene, the body was to be taken to the Forensic Center at the UPMC Susquehanna Williamsport Regional Medical Center and then later to the Lehigh Medical Center, Allentown, where an autopsy will be performed today or Tuesday, Ross said.

Police put numerous markers down on the road where evidence was collected.

"We're just starting the investigation right now," one trooper said.

Anyone with information is asked to call the barracks at 570-368-5700.

This was the second homicide in the county this week.

Shawn Graham, 33, was found shot to death last Tuesday night inside his city home at 2225 W. Third St..

A man seen fleeing the scene in a Dodge Charger, 27-year-old Paul Heath, was stopped by a city police officer in the 1500 block of West Third Street.

Police said Heath, of Philadelphia, shot the officer, Patrolman Nicholas Carrita, then fled in the car, taking police on a lengthy high-speed pursuit that ended at Sheetz on Route 220 in Woodward Township, where Heath, engaged state police in a brief gun battle before turning the gun on himself, according to investigators.

Carrita was briefly hospitalized with a gunshot wound to the right arm.
