The Williamsport Area School District board approved the hiring of a full-time supervisor of pupil transportation & school safety at its meeting Tuesday.
Brandon Coleman, who is currently employed at the Keystone Central School District, was hired at a salary of $73,000, prorated, effective April 1, 2019. Coleman replaces Scott Williams, who resigned.
In curriculum matters, the board approved considering formation of a girls 7th & 8th grade volleyball program at the Middle School for the 2019-2020 school year.
The board gave its approval for two course offerings for district students through Lock Haven University: intro to computer science and intro to criminal justice. The request for approval included offering 1.0 high school elective credits for each course and including the course on a student's transcript as a 1.4 weight. Each course would factor into the grade point average and will contribute to class rank as long as a student's total credits do not exceed eight for the 2019-2020 school year. Cost for the course would be the responsibility of the family.
In other curriculum items, they approved:
• The 2019 spring sports schedule for the district.
• The purchase of 36 digital recorders from AngelTrax at a cost of $36,033.36, which includes a one-year license and system setup for STA vehicles. Costs will be paid through the technology budget.
• A Memorandum of Understanding between the school district and STEP Inc., administrator of STEP Head Start for the purpose of coordinating mutually beneficial activities of the parties involved to provide effective services for children and their families.
• A letter of agreement with Crossroads Counseling, Inc., to ensure continuity of care for students receiving mental health and substance abuse services through the agency. The agreement expires March 2021. A similar letter of agreement with Community Services Group to provide mental health service through March 2021 was also approved by the board.
Under personnel, the board approved:
• Paisley J. Simmons as a non-certified substitute teacher at a rate of $90 per day for the first 45 days and $110 per day for days beyond 45, but not to exceed 180 days per year.
• The resignations of Tammi M. Grove, second grade teacher at Stevens Primary School and Jenny B. Canfield, part-time aide at the high school.
The board also approved the following spring sports coaches, their sports and schools:
• Thomas P. O'Malley, varsity assistant softball, at the high school.
• Devin K. Miller, assistant boys' track and field, at the high school.
• Mackenzie R. Bowman, volunteer girls soccer, at the middle school.
• Sean A. Andrews, volunteer wrestling, at the high school.
Member present were: Lori Baer, Dr. Jane Penman, Brette Confair, Patrick Dison, Jennifer Lake, Barbara Reeves, Marc Shefsky, Dr. Nancy Story Somers and Adam Welteroth.
The next board meeting will be at 6 p.m., March 19 at Stevens Primary School, 1150 Louisa St. Prior to the meeting, the board will tour the school at 5 p.m.
