As grounds are being tilled and some early planters are eager to get going on vegetable gardens, forecasters say there's always a chance for an onion snow.
The onion snow, a description that originated in Lancaster County with the Pennsylvania Dutch, refers to a snow that falls after the onions, carrots and early blooming veggies are planted and starting to sprout.
It's generally a light snow, but it's a season buster, according to the National Weather Service in State College.
The onion snow usually happens after some people start wearing short-sleeves and getting outside without jackets on.
It can be very unpredictable, like this same week in 1982 when the temperature dropped into the teens with a low of 18 - enough to damage anything growing.
This week, don't look for the dusting of snow or any kind of worries for the plant life bursting from the soil.
A series of weak waves aloft will keep us unsettled through Tuesday, said John LaCorte, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in State College.
While these temperature changes aren't going to result in snow, high pressures will bring brief relief from the April showers for mid-week before another cold front arrives Friday, he said in his long-term forecast.
Today will feel the polar opposite of an onion snow day, with temperatures soaring to 75 degrees, but with wind gusts as high as 26 miles per hour.
The low tonight will only be 50, with the winds lower and from the west at 5 to 8 mph, LaCorte said.
The remainder of the mid-week will be warm, with a high Tuesday of 68, but with a chance of showers before 2 p.m. Again, winds will be felt, with gusts of up to 23 mph.
Wednesday will be cooler and cloudy, with a high near 56. The low Wednesday will be chillier, with a low reaching 35.
Thursday is expected to be mostly cloudy, with a high near 58. Thursday night there is a chance of showers with a low around 46.
It looks like a weekend of unsettled weather, with showers likely Friday, and maybe a thunderstorm popping up. Look for more wet weather Friday night, but a return of partly sunny skies Saturday and Sunday, with highs both days in the mid-50s.
