Incumbents lose, give up seats

The voters spoke in Muncy, Montgomery boroughs Tuesday, as incumbents were knocked off the roster, and one candidate was nominated despite his intention to withdraw.

In Muncy Borough, which is slated to elect four council members, Republican voters decided on Thaddeus F. Martin to be nominated over incumbent Elaine McAleer, with 20.18 percent or 229 votes.

Republican incumbents largely kept their nominations, with: Scott E. Delany, who received the largest portion of votes with 24.23 percent, or 275 votes; Richard “Buzz” Baker, who received 19.74 percent, or 224 votes; and Linda Stein, who received 18.38 percent, or 208 votes.

Jeffrey Silverling won an uncontested Democratic nomination in Muncy. He, any potential write-in Democratic candidates and the four Republicans will race against each other in November.

In Montgomery Borough, incumbent Mark Berbier informed Lycoming County Voter Services that he will be withdrawing from local politics, despite having been voted in as one of the borough’s three Republican nominees for a four-year council member position. A write-in candidate will fill his position.

The two other Republican nominees were: Clayton Steward, who received 36.25 percent, or 116 votes; and Ed E. Alexander, who received 27.19 percent, or 87 votes.

Democrat Laurel K. Green won the Democratic nomination, uncontested. Write-in candidates will fill the other two nominations.

Several members of the current Montgomery Borough Council, whose terms expire at the end of the year, chose not to run for reelection. Lynn Crist, council president, L. Whitlow Wertz, council vice-president, and Dale Brindle, council member, did not put their names forward for nomination.

Mark Berbier was also registered to run for Montgomery Borough’s two-year term council seat, however this nomination will also be filled by Republican write-in candidates, who will run against other write-in candidates in November.
