GOP urges members to get out the vote
Republicans stressed the very importance of getting out the vote this election day and casting ballots for members of their party.
The Lycoming County Republican Committee Fall Dinner Saturday night featured candidates for a number of local political offices as well as U.S. Rep. Fred Keller, R-Middleburg, and Carolyn “Bunny” Welsh, the first woman sheriff of Chester County.
Lycoming County Republican Chairman Joseph Hamm told the audience of more than 100 people that Democrats are pushing a leftist socialist agenda.
This comes at a time, he said, when the nation under President Donald Trump is experiencing a booming economy with rising wages.
Now, he said, is the opportunity for Republicans to ensure the state remains red.
Keller lambasted Democrats for proceeding with their attempts to impeach Trump.
He accused them of conducting their business behind closed doors and shutting Republicans out of their meetings.
“We are trying to shed the light on this,” he said. “We are in a fight for our republic.”
Lycoming County Commissioner Republican candidates Tony Mussare and Scott Metzger each spoke to the audience.
Mussare talked about how the natural gas impact fee has funded millions of dollars of projects for Lycoming County.
He noted that Lycoming County Commissioner Rick Mirabito, a Democratic also seeking re-election, voted against the impact fee while a member of the state House.
Mussare pleaded with everyone to get out and vote on election day.
Metzger said the county budget process is not working.
“With a budget you have to have a plan, and we don’t have that currently,” he said.
Metzger said he has a vision and leadership skills.
He said he knows what to do going forward.
Metzger also took a swipe at Mirabito, calling him a minority commissioner who acts like a majority commissioner.
Williamsport City Mayoral candidate Eric Beiter touted his business experience.
He said he began working in his family’s business, Beiter’s Home Center, when he was 13.
He now manages numerous employees and understands what it is to work.
“We need people in place who understand business,” he said. “Experience is what I have.”
Hamm urged Williamsport voters not to cast a vote for Republican Gabriel Campana, who is staging a write-in campaign to hold on to his mayoral seat.
“Don’t write Campana in,” he said. “Vote for Eric Beiter. Otherwise, we’ll put a Democrat mayor in.”
Megan McCarthy King, a Republican candidate for state Superior Court judge, said it’s important to elect conservatives to the bench.
Welch, president of the Pennsylvania Sheriffs Association, spoke on behalf of Trump.
Welch, who said she is friend of the president, referred to him as a soft-spoken, compassionate man, and a good listener.
“It’s no secret he’s unfiltered,” she said. “He’s unfiltered and unscripted.”
But the Trump, she knows, is different from what many people see in public, she said.
