City man in custody after allegedly robbing liquor store

Anthony Benson, 58, of 325 Center St., was arrested by city police on charges of robbery, theft by unlawful taking, receiving stolen property, simple assault, disorderly conduct and public drunkenness after he allegedly robbed the Wine and Spirits store at 449 Hepburn St. on Thursday evening.

According to court records, the robbery was reported at around 6:35 p.m. after Benson had left the premises and he was “believed” to have a firearm.

The cashier at the scene stated that Benson asked her to open the register and when she refused his request he unzipped his jacket and “gestured as if he had a gun” while continuing to demand she open the register.

Court records added that he reached over the counter to remove handfuls of cash and attempted to leave when another employee tried to stop him. Benson again gestured as if for a gun and the employee moved, according to the documents.

Benson was found running within the perimeter and was “apprehended at gun point by officers at the rear of 630 W. Edwin Street,” according to court records.

There was a strong odor of alcohol emitting from Benson’s person, police reported.

He allegedly requested to hide in a local’s residence.

Further information concerning bail and a preliminary hearing was not available at press time.
