Commissioners near deal for district judge office

Lycoming County Commissioners say they are close to a deal for securing a new site for the office of Magisterial District Judge William C. Solomon.

The present location in Old Lycoming Township, leased by the county, is in need of upgrades.

“The facility is old,” Commissioner Jack McKernan said at Thursday’s commissioners meeting. “It needs a lot of work.”

A building has been selected elsewhere in the township where court hearings, arraignments and administrative duties performed by Solomon and his staff can be done.

Commissioner Rick Mirabito said the purchase of the property, which was not disclosed by county officials, is contingent upon appraisals and eventual approval by commissioners.

He said selection of a site comes after considering a number of locations.

The county has six magisterial district judge offices.

Commissioners said it makes more sense to have in place a county-owned site than to rent out space for a district judge.

“It’s a good investment of county dollars,” McKernan said.

Commissioner Tony Mussare said the purchase is within the county’s budget.

“This is a public safety project we’ve tried to solve for the last two years,” he said.

Starting at $2.99/week.
