Rally calls for impeachment of Trump
MARK NANCE/Sun-Gazette Organizier Jordi Comas, right, addresses an anti-Trump rally at the corner of West Third and Market Streets Tuesday night.
Braving the December chill in downtown Williamsport Tuesday, dozens demanded the removal of President Donald J. Trump from the highest office in the land.
The local rally held in Market Square on the eve of the House vote to impeach the President was reportedly among some 550 similar events held nationwide.
Caleb Williams, of Wellsboro, noted that he was among several people from his community who came to the rally.
“If any Democratic president had done any of these things Trump has done, Republicans would be aghast,” he said. “They are accusing Democrats of being political when their complicity is the ultimate hypocrisy.”
“I want my family to remember I’m here,” Dave Kagan, of Jersey Shore, said. “I’ve been against Trump since day one or minus day one. He is against everything I’m for. He is uneducated. He is unqualified. He’s uncouth. He’s crude.”
But also, Kagan said, the articles of impeachment are certainly reason for Trump’s removal from office.
Kagan wore a T-shirt bearing the words: “Not My President.”
A pin on his hat said: “Dump Trump.”
The rally, included rehearsed questions and responses chanted by the crowd:
“What do we want?
“Impeachment.”
“When do we want it?
“Now.”
Alison Hirsch, of Williamsport, said, “What he’s (Trump) done is so much worse than what (President) Nixon did. He dangled foreign aid to get them to interfere in our elections.”
Hirsch, a local historian, said the main message of the rally was to demonstrate that no one is above the law.
Shirley Cottom, of Williamsport, said she came to support everyone who came to the gathering.
“We need to impeach him and bring some happiness into the world,” she said.
Cottom said her sister-in-law, Trish Brown, contacted her about the event.
“I can’t even stand to look at that man (Trump) on the TV anymore,” Brown said.
She said she felt empowered and enthusiastic over seeing others turning out for the rally.
Jordi Comas, of The Hub 4 Progress, which organized the rally, talked to those gathered at the southwest corner of the busy intersection as motorists drove past beeping horns either in support or in opposition.
“This is how we deal with someone who breaks the oath of office,” he said. “The man has corrupted the office for personal gain.”
Comas criticized certain lawmakers, including U.S. Rep. Fred Keller, R-Kreamer, and Dan Meuser, R-Pottsville, for supporting Trump.
He urged everyone to call U.S. Sen. Pat Toomey, R-Zionsville, and request that he vote to impeach the President.
“We can’t wait for an election,” he said. “Congress must do its due diligence.”
