Lycoming County commissioners approved a $1 million grant for materials and labor in support of the levee system during their meeting Thursday.
The Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program (RACP) grant will target improvements needed for the levee, which protects the city from flooding, to bring it up to certification.
Among the needed improvements are the repairing of relief wells, building a sturdier wall and raising the levee "freeboard" by 3 feet along the Lycoming Creek side.
Without certification, residents and businesses protected by levees built by the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers, would have to pay flood insurance.
The levee protects an estimated $2 billion in real estate.
Commissioners credited Gov. Tom Wolf and state Sen. Gene Yaw, R-Loyalsock Township, for helping secure the grant.
In other matters, commissioners approved an amendment to an agreement with Williamsport Municipal Water Authority to extend work to the end of the year on a water main replacement project.
In personnel matters, commissioners approved the appointment of Morgan Madden as assistant solicitor at an hourly wage of $100. She replaces Rachel Planas.
Commissioners approved David Poretta to fill a full-time adult probation officer position at an hourly wage of $21.95.
Joshua Ward was approved as a full-time replacement for a correctional officer position at $17.23 per hour.
The commissioners will next meet 10 a.m. Tuesday at Executive Plaza, 330 Pine St., Williamsport.
