One dead in violent crash on Route 14 near Ralston

RALSTON — A 53-year-old Williamsport man was killed early Sunday afternoon when his 2016 Hyundai Elantra went off the road and crashed into a tree on Route 14, about two miles north of here, in McIntyre Township, according to state police.

Joseph Yuscavage was pronounced dead at the scene by Jerold Ross, the county’s chief deputy coroner, police said.

The crash was witnessed by a couple who were in a vehicle two cars behind the driver.

“His vehicle went to the right a little bit, veered off to the left and went airborne. He never hit his brakes. When he went off the road, he was already in the air,” the husband said.

Police said the driver was traveling south when he lost control of the car.

“You could see underneath his car. He was that high in the air,” said the wife.

The couple, who declined to give their name, was returning to their home when the crash, which occurred right in front of their house, happened about 12:10 p.m.

“He was going so fast that he cleared an embankment,” the husband said.

“He didn’t go down the embankment and then hit the tree. He was flying in the air,” the wife said.

“I ran into the house and called 911,” she added.

The Hyundai’s impact with the tree pretty much obliterated the front of the vehicle. The car’s battery and one of the headlights flew 100 to 125 feet.

Debris from the wreckage littered the couple’s front yard.

“There was no signs of life when I got in the car to check on him,” the husband said.

Volunteer firefighters from Ralston, Trout Run, Hepburn Township and Old Lycoming Township responded to the crash.

In order to free Yuscavage’s body from the wreckage, firefighters had to remove the car’s roof.

Volunteer fire police were able to keep one lane of traffic open during the accident investigation.
