Tax day extension on city’s agenda

City taxpayers may be getting a tax filing deadline extension.

A proposal by Nicholas Grimes, city treasurer and tax collector, will go before City Council on April 2, he said.

The deadline extension is due to the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions for individuals and businesses, he said.

The proposal is to extend the deadline to pay city real estate taxes at the discounted rate from April 30 to June 30, and an extension to pay the face rate from June 30 to Aug. 31, he said.

The proposal also seeks to extend the deadline to file and pay 2020 business privilege and mercantile taxes from April 15 to July 15, he said.

The Lycoming County Municipal and School Earned Income Tax Office said the deadline to file and pay local earned income taxes has been extended from April 15 to July 15.

The deadline is in line with new state and federal income tax deadlines.

City extensions would not apply to county, school or other municipalities’ taxes, Grimes said.
