WAHS approves formation of eSports club for gamers

The Williamsport Area School District board approved the creation of an eSports Club in the high school, Tuesday.

The club, advised by Nicholas Karl, will provide an opportunity for gamers to interact.

In other curriculum items, the board approved:

• An agreement with Mansfield University to allow the placement of student teachers and field study participants in the district.

• A memorandum of understanding between the district and STEP Inc., administrator of STEP Head Start, an annual requirement to be submitted to the state department of education.

• Stipends for the production staff and musicians for the production of “Beauty and the Beast.”

In other business, Superintendent Dr. Timothy S. Bowers reported that, in anticipation of the upcoming budget season, the administration has been meeting with principals and department heads in order to go through individual budgets.

“We’ve looked at everything very closely before we bring it into one document,” he said.

“We’re actually going through those individual budgets and talking to the budget managers. We’re in full swing for the budget season,” he added.

It was announced that the High School Career Fair will be held March 12. He urged any organizations or companies that are interested in the event should contact the district as there is still time to be participate.

The board accepted the resignations of Phyllis J. Sieber, school counselor, Selena Lopez, part-time aide and Angela K. Harman, part-time food service worker.

They also approved hiring Theodore C. Paul and Kalif R. Randolph as custodian floaters, at $13.01 per hour.

Other persons hired were: Gregorey P. Robertson, assistant varsity baseball coach at $2,800; Ethan S. Lee, substitute after school tutor at $31.20 per hour; Myranda M. Cobb, substitute custodian and/or event staff at $9.00 or $10.00 per hour; Victoria L. Killoran, Courtney E. Baumer and Audrey G. Ulmer, substitute administrative support aides at $9.00 per hour; J. Scott McNeil, Middle School girls’ soccer head coach, at $2,400; Kyle J. Bidelspacher, volunteer for Middle School girls’ soccer; Baumer as a non-certified substitute teacher at $90 per day for the first 45 and $100 per day after that and Daniel Hensley as the strength and conditioning coach at the high school fitness center from June 8 to July 30 for up to four hours a day, four days per week at $22.00 per hour.

Bids and contracts approved by the board included:

• The Notice of Termination associated with the Millionaire Drive Project and NPDES permit #PA410037 and authorize the document to be recorded with the Lycoming County Conservation District.

• The estimate from Loffredo’s Tree Trimming & Removal, Jersey Shore, to remove five trees and grind six stumps at Cochran Primary School at a cost of $4,700.

Members present were: Lori Baer, Jane Penman, Patrick Dixon, Jennifer Lake, Barbara Reeves, Marc Schefsky, Dr. Nancy Story Somers and Adam Welteroth. Absent: Star Poole

The next board meeting will be at 6 p.m. March 17 at the District Center board room, 2780 West Fourth Street.
