MUNCY -- Both drivers were killed Tuesday afternoon in a violent two-car head-on collision that occurred on Route 405 in front of the Hughesville Raceway II Self Storage, just north of the Meadowbook Trailer Park, according to state police.
Their identities were expected to be released later today as investigators worked Tuesday night to notify their families.
Killed in the crash was a 55-year-old Benton man and a 67-year-old Hughesville area woman, who lived about a half a mile from the scene, police said.
The man was driving a Kia Optima and was heading north when his car crossed the center line, entered the southbound lane and collided with a Nissan Altima that the woman was driving about 3:45 p.m., police said.
"It appears that she attempted to get out of his way, but she was still hit," a state trooper at the scene.
The man was pronounced dead on the scene by Lycoming County Deputy Coroner Howard Woodruff. The woman was rushed by ambulance to the Muncy Valley Hospital, where she died in the emergency room, Lycoming County Coroner Charles E. Kiessling Jr. confirmed.
A section of the two-lane road was closed for about two hours as state troopers processed the scene, taking measurements and photographs.
Volunteer fire police as well as employees of the state Department of Transportation detoured traffic around the scene until the demolished vehicles were towed away.
Investigators were still trying to determine what caused the man to lose control of his car.
