Most customers have paid stormwater fees, some remain delinquent
Not all Lycoming County Water & Sewer customers facing stormwater fees have paid their bills in a timely fashion, but as of yet that is not a big concern, according to officials.
Christine Weigle, executive director of the Water & Sewer Authority, told board members Wednesday that they are monitoring the situation and trying to figure out why some property owners in South Williamsport and DuBoistown have not made payments.
So far, her office has received payments totaling $22,531 from 79 percent of South Williamsport property owners billed for stormwater fees.
In DuBoistown, 84 percent of customers have paid their bills amounting to $6,412.
Property owners were first assessed for stormwater runoff in July as part of the Chesapeake Bay Pollution Reduction Plan for many communities across the state.
Weigle noted that some property owners are appealing their stormwater fee assessments while many others may not understand the process.
COVID-19 may yet be another reason for the delinquencies, she noted.
“Delinquency is not a concern just yet,” she said.
In other matters, the Authority agreed to forgive customers delinquent in paying their monthly water and sewer bills for the month of August.
Each month since the onset of COVID-19, the Authority has renewed the payment forgiveness policy which includes no water shut-offs for customers.
Weigle said the policy will be revisited at the September meeting.
The Authority approved a sewer line extension in Fairfield Township.
