City Council to consider hiring new director

City Council is expected to look at an administrative vacancy tonight.

A request was made by Mayor Derek Slaughter to hire August Memmi as director of the Department of Community and Economic Development. The job will pay Memmi $61,000 for a probationary period of about six months and then go to $65,000 a year.

Memmi hails from Dauphin County, where he had extensive experience in economic development and community development, Slaughter said.

City Police Chief Damon R. Hagan is expected to present a resolution authorizing a memorandum of understanding between the city and Williamsport Area School District to continue employment of Sgt. Jody Miller as the school resource officer.

Representatives with Hutchinson Development Co. are expected to present a land development for a Dollar General at 305 Washington Blvd. The developer has been denied two variances in a May zoning hearing board meeting and then following an adjustment on the plan to reduce its size, met the ordinance requirements, said Gary Knarr, city zoning administrator.

Neighbors in that area of the city were alerted to the plan, he said.

Council, typically, sets its 2021 council meeting schedule up in the October meeting. That is supposed to be discussed, according to the agenda.

The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. and is on Zoom remote technology. To follow it, go to the city website front page and look for the directions on the YouTube site for the meeting.
