East Lycoming designates CARES Act funds

By Pat Crossley 2 min read

HUGHESVILLE -- The East Lycoming School District will receive $329,000 in CARES Act funding from the county, Michael Pawlik, district superintendent, told the school board at their meeting Tuesday night.

Pawlik noted that the district will use the money to purchase new Chromebooks for students. The CARES Act funding is designed to make sure that school districts were equipped if they needed to go online or if they needed more infrastructure to support being online, Pawlik said.

He also announced that the East Lycoming Foundation had received $56,000 in donations through the Educational Improvement Tax Credit program as well as through scholarships.

"We're thrilled that even in such a challenging environment as there is right now in our society that people are still thinking very favorably of our foundation and are still making donations," Pawlik said.

The donations for the EITC portion of it will be for grants that teachers in the district can apply to use for different projects with their students, he said.

Students who are in online programs are eligible to pick up the free meals, available for all students in the district, on Mondays and Wednesdays at the Evangelical Friends Church, 137 South Third St. The district's nutrition department transports the meals to the church where volunteers hand them out, Pawlik said. On Mondays, students receive two breakfasts and two lunches and on Wednesdays, three breakfasts and three lunches.

Board president Richard Michael reported that the athletic committee had met to discuss the issue of attendance at fall and winter sports. Michael indicated that as soon as the district receives guidance from the PIAA they will post the information on the district website.

The high school gym has a seating capacity of 1,983, so the number of people including the players and essential personnel allowed in the facility would be based on whether 15 or 20 percent of that number would be allowed to attend an event.

In other business under personnel items the board accepted the resignations of Steven McLoney, full-time custodian and Alisha Myers, part-time food service worker at Renn Elementary School.

They also approved the appointment of Penny Johnson to the daily substitute teacher/support staff/guest teacher listing, retroactive to 10/6/2020.

Alisha McKinley was approved by the board as assistant girls' varsity basketball coach for the 2020-21 season at a rate $3,168.

The next board meeting will be at 7 p.m. Oct. 27.
