MARK NANCE/Sun-Gazette John Forciglio of Williamsport uses a leaf blower to clear the snow from the sidewalk in front of Kinley and Sons Jewelers as snow begins to accumulate Wednesday afternoon.

The fast-moving winter nor'easter began barreling into Williamsport at noon Wednesday with latest snowfall accumulation to be 17 inches in 22 hours, the National Weather Service in State College said.

Accumulation should be 1 inch less in Lock Haven at 16 inches and 3 inches more or 20 inches in Sullivan County, the forecast showed.

PPL Electric anticipated and prepared ahead for power outages due to accumulation of snowfall and winds of 5 to 10 miles per hour and occasional gusts of wind up to 20 miles per hour, said Tracy Witter, PPL spokeswoman.

Forecasters said the snow consistency will be light and fluffy and not wet and compacted.

Danger is the temperatures are in the upper twenties to lower 30s and prolonged exposure to the cold can cause hypothermia.

City public works department truck operators asked people not to shovel out their vehicles if they must be left on streets so plows can push snow.

Snow in the city will be taken Thursday and Friday to Bowman Field parking lot, said Adam Winder, city public works acting general manager.

State Department of Transportation District 3 spokeswoman Kim Smith in Montoursville said highways such as Interstate 180 and routes 15, 220, and other state routes will be plowed throughout the storm but said traveling by vehicle will be nearly impossible.

Starting at /week.
