HUGHESVILLE -- Although it's still in the preliminary stages, the budget figures for the East Lycoming School District revealed a possible .58 increase in the real estate millage for the 2021-22 fiscal year.
With this increase, the district's millage would be increased from 14.38 to 14.96 and residents could expect to see an extra $58 per $100,000 of their property's assessed value, added to their tax bill.
This first budget presentation was made by Heather Burke, District Business Manager, at the school board's meeting Tuesday. The final budget is expected to be approved in May.
The proposed general fund budget of $26,747,820 reflects a total increase of $647,700 or 2.59 percent over the 2020-21 budget.
The main drivers of the proposed increase in the real estate rate for district property owners, according to Burke, are: salaries and wages, $252,594, up 2.29 percent from 2020-21; PA school retirement system contributions, $104,840, up 2.79 percent from 2020-21; debt service for prior bond issues, $192.979; and facility maintenance project reserve, $125,000.
Burke noted in her presentation that the facility maintenance project reserve allocation allows the district to plan for projects occurring in the next three to five years. This includes the replacement of the air conditioning chiller at the high school and roof refurbishments.
In other business under personnel, the board accepted the resignations of Virginia Bitler, custodian and crossing guard, Logan Kline, security worker and Katie Buynak, secretary.
They approved hiring the following personnel at the stated rates:
• Sarah Roslevich, part-time food service worker, $11.82 per hour.
• Karen Henry and Rebecka Rowland, full-time custodial workers, $12.89 per hour.
• Heather Smith, part-time custodial and crossing guard, $12.89 per hour.
• Eliza Treese, part-time special education teacher, $32.42 per hour.
• Amy Showers, full-time guidance counselor K-12/high school career counselor, $53,985.
The board also approved the following substitute teaching staff and support personnel: Thomas Gargiulo, Cammy Hemenway, Chelsea Miller, Bryan Patel, Amanda Pollari and Carly Rogers, all BLaST guest teachers and Jennifer Fabiano, English 7-12.
Coaching reappointments and salaries for the 2021 season okayed by the board were:
• Varsity baseball: Chris Kish, head coach, $4,629; Rod Smith, assistant, $3,891; Nathan Hill, assistant, $3,969; and Matthew Balliet, volunteer.
• Varsity softball: Dave Dimoff, head coach, $4,722; Scott Stugart and Todd Snyder, assistants, both at $3,969.
• Varsity boys' track: Griffin Molino, head coach, $2,889; Rob Wallis, assistant, $4,129; Janee Smith, assistant, $3,969.
• Varsity girls track: Fred Glenwright, $6,328 and Jan Mostowy, girls track assistant, $5,046.
• Junior High boys' soccer, Jim Dennis, head coach, $3,743.
• Junior High girls' soccer, Zane Campbell, head coach, $3,334.
• Varsity boys' tennis, Josh Fry, head coach, $3,669.
