Local Republicans to consider censure of Sen. Toomey

Lycoming County Republicans are likely to call for the censure of U.S. Sen. Pat Toomey, R-Zionsville this week.
Vince Matteo, chair of the county Republican Committee, said when the group meets, the matter will come up for discussion.
"My guess is there will be a motion," he said. "I think it will pass."
Toomey's call for President Trump to resign from office, Matteo said, was completely unacceptable.
"He did call on the president to resign prior to any investigations or evidence regarding what took place on Jan. 6," he said. "People have the right to due process."
Trump was acquitted in his second impeachment trial Saturday by a Senate vote of 57-43, which fell short of the two-thirds majority needed for conviction. Toomey was among seven Republican senators who voted Trump was guilty of inciting a riot at the U.S. Capitol.
Toomey announced in 2020 that he is stepping down from the Senate and not seeking re-election.
Lycoming County Republican Committee Secretary Cody Hoover said he will not be available to take part in the expected vote to consider the censure of Toomey.
However, he said he is in favor of such action. He said Toomey turned his back on the Republican Party.
"The president never ordered the rioters to storm the Capitol. The impeachment process was unconstitutional as well," he said.
Over the weekend, the York County Republican Committee voted to censure Toomey, citing his voting record and being out of touch with the core beliefs of the people of Pennsylvania.
Republican committees in Centre, Clarion, and Washington counties have also voted to censure Toomey.
