The weather is breaking and those who care about accessibility in Williamsport's nine parks were given assignments to check for inclusivity and access as the city consulting firms go after federal and state government grants.
Three of the members on City Council's accessibility advisory commission Thursday said during the meeting on Zoom that they were willing to go out and check on any issues they find that may be able to put on a list for two of the city economic development consulting firms - Delta Development Group and Thomas Keller and Keller Partners.
The inspections will look at: Memorial Park, Newberry/Phil Preziosi Park; Youngs Woods Park, Lose Park, Ways Garden, East End Park, Veterans Memorial Park and Brandon Park.
Max Moore, a commission member, said he thought it was a good idea to have members split the workload to check on the park standards.
Mayor Derek Slaughter attended the session and spoke with members Moore, Tyler Mogavero and Timothy West and Councilman Jon Mackey.
"City parks and outdoor facilities will be heavily used in coming months," Mackey said.
Already in the chain are possible funding sources for accessibility compliance at Lose Park among other improvements for this year, Slaughter said.
"We want to include as much as we can in our grant applications," Slaughter said.
Some of the grant applications are due in the not-so-distant-future, the mayor said.
The next meeting is likely to include Kayla Drummond, city recreation director, who was invited to attend.
Slaughter is prepared to appoint two more voting members on the commission.
A non-voting consulting position also will be voted on by council.
Mackey said the more individuals on the commission will take the workload off the existing voting members.
