The Williamsport Regional Airport will continue with American Airlines service until at least September.

Airport Executive Director Richard Howell told the Williamsport Municipal Airport Authority Thursday that an allocation of federal funding will allow for the daily commercial flights to resume beyond this month.

President Joe Biden this week signed the $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief bill, which includes money for airports.

American Airlines was scheduled to discontinue flights to Philadelphia at the end of this month.

For several months, there were no commercial flights to and from the airport.

"We are still working on Charlotte service," Howell said.

American Airlines began flying from Williamsport to Charlotte, North Carolina, in August before discontinuing the service in October.

Howell said funding through the Small Community Air Service Development Program could allow for Charlotte service again.

In February, community leaders took part in a three-hour webinar citing reasons why commercial airline service was vital for the area.

The Center for Rural Pennsylvania Hearing brought together officials from government, industry, education, and health care.

Howell told the Authority that the airport received $145,247 in CARES funding in February, bringing its total allocation to $2.2 million.

Starting at /week.
