An accessible ramp construction project on the north side of City Hall of about $165,000 was given a positive recommendation Tuesday by City Council's finance committee.
Landserve Inc.'s work includes making the ramp in its factory. The city wants it to look nice and match the facade of the building with an additional stone veneer to match the historic government building, adding ambiance and aesthetics.
The project was estimated at $160,000 to $180,000, according to the bid summary. The highest bid for the project was $586,000.
"This is much more affordable and gives us leeway to make it an attractive and serviceable addition to City Hall," Councilwoman Liz Miele, committee chairwoman, said.
An automatic door system is not a part of the project but the city administration will ensure that gets done along with the elevator modification project, which are separate bids, said Jon Sander, city engineer.
Landscaping, lights and veneer are possible after the ramp gets built and is up.
The ramp originally was designed by Gannett-Fleming of State College two years ago.
The ramp and elevator modification -- a bid that is going to arrive in coming weeks -- are requirements the city must meet as part of a settlement to avoid a potential lawsuit by advocates for the disabled community.
