Nearly $20,000 in South Side police surplus likely headed to school district

South Williamsport Borough Council Monday approved the surplus sale of police equipment to South Williamsport Area School District pending the school board approval expected this month.

The surplus equipment will yield $19,858 for the borough, provided the school board gives the proposal its approval, and there is no perceived obstacle according to Dr. Mark Stamm, school district superintendent, said Steven W. Cappelli, borough manager.

The pending sale includes a 2015 Ford Explorer, camera, firearms and ammunition and a non-lethal Taser.

A proposal to hire Norman Hager as chief was tabled until further details could be worked out. Hager remains as officer in charge of the borough police department.

To accommodate the impending chief hiring, council voted to remove a residency requirement for police chief in the borough job description.

Council swore in two new members to fill two vacancies. Taking oaths of office given by Mayor Marlin Angelo were Timothy Pregent and Rick Kershner. The new councilmen will serve at least until the remainder of the year, said Joe Orso, borough solicitor.

Council approved hiring an appraiser to place a value on the land at the foot of the Market Street Bridge between the north and southbound lanes where the Seventh-day Adventist Church stands.

The church site is going to be made into a Muncy Bank & Trust.
