Loyalsock Township supervisors this week approved a memorandum of understanding with Williamsport Municipal Sanitary Authority for a Joint Chesapeake Bay pollution reduction plan.
Since the city transferred its stormwater management systems to the authority and the township has an agreement with the city the memorandum was necessary as part of the multi-municipal stormwater systems permitting process, said Bill Burdett, township manager.
The vote was unanimous among supervisors. Voting were Marc Sortman, chairman; Virginia Eaton, vice chairwoman; Richard Wheeland, John Bower Jr. and Paul Nyman.
Burdett said the township required a new memorandum replacing the older one with the city. Since the sanitary authority began its working relationship before this with the township the communication and impact has been effective, Burdett said.
He noted the township-authority relationship has paid in dividends and cost savings and cited an example. A recent water bill at the recreation center was unusually high.
The authority staff took that into consideration after checking if there was a leak and made adjustments accordingly, Burdett said.
The township is prepared to advertise and open position on its public works/streets department.
A surveillance camera affixed to the exteriors of public works vehicles has proven effective and will remain on the trucks.
"It protects employees," Burdett said. It can identify if a truck hits a manhole or if there is a vehicle accident it can be used as a tool to determine who is at fault, officials said in discussion.
The township community pool is expected to open on the weekend of Memorial Day, said Shannon Lukowsky, recreation director.
