A garden has been planted and dedicated in memory of loved ones lost over the past year to COVID-19.
"Welcome to our Memorial Garden tribute at Valley View Rehabilitation and Nursing Center," said Michele Brague, administrator, along with Jeri Demel, board president.
The tour of the garden was attended by numerous residents and their guests.
In her blessing, Pastor Gwen Bernstine focused not only on the garden's beauty, but on the garden serving as a place to mourn and remember loved ones in the surrounding outdoors.
The names of all those residents who succumbed to the virus and illness last year were read.
"We will remember our beloved residents," Brague said.
"I enjoyed being here today and it was so nice to see some of the residents that I knew when Bob was there; it was also good to see some of the familiar families whose loved ones had passed on as well," said Betty Jones, wife of the late Robert Jones.
Gerald Otterbein, son of Betty Otterbein, stated: "The dedication was very touching today; we wanted to show our appreciation for how well she was treated at Valley View and show the family's gratitude. Our family wanted to share this day in memory of Mother."
Eugene Otterbein Sr., of Picture Rocks, also attended.
Three separate areas were dedicated: The center courtyard, Sunrise Terrace Memory Care and the front of the Valley View.
Contributions were accepted toward the purchase of flowering plants, shrubs and trees.
Once the areas are completed, Valley View will invite the families back to see where their loved ones 'special place' is in the Memorial Garden as their names will be etched in a beautiful copper plate, Brague said.
An observation window at the Sunrise Terrace offered guests and residents a chance to see nature and wildlife.
Song birds and rabbits, squirrels and deer can be seen from the observation window.
Names of the departed were to be added to a copper slate. Donations from residents' families made the garden a reality.
The garden features concrete pathways and on either side shrubbery, ornamental plants and flowers in full bloom. Benches are available for comfort as are wooden rockers.
The dedication featured a catered lunch with freshly picked berries, light refreshments and beverages.
