Polls open for primary election

By Mike Reuther 2 min read

Lycoming County voters will head to the polls for Tuesday's primary election to nominate candidates for school board and municipal offices.

Also on the ballot are candidates for sheriff and a district judge spot as well as four ballot questions.

Polls open at 7 a.m. and close at 8 p.m.

The voter turnout for a primary is normally lower than that for a general election.

In the past two primary elections, voter turnout has been between 41 percent and 42 percent in Lycoming County.

Last year's Presidential election resulted in 80.63 percent of voters casting ballots, according to county voter office figures.

The general primary of 2018 resulted in a 24.30 percent voter turnout and in 2017 the figure was even lower at 22.07 percent.

"I expect this will be slowest election of the next four years," Voter Services Director Forest Lehman said. "I could be proven wrong with the ballot questions."

About 4,000 ballots were mailed out to voters.

"I think we will be at about 3,000 coming back," Lehman said.

Republicans continue to comprise the majority of registered voters in the county at 41,776.

Democrats make up 20,058 of county voters.

Numbers for the rest of the county's registered voters are: 9,093, Other, 377, Libertarian Party, and 61 Green Party.
