One month in, the Warrior Run School District's $37 million construction project, which includes an elementary school and stadium, "is moving along pretty well," according to Dr. Alan Hack, district superintendent.
Expectations are that it will meet the projected completion date. The stadium is scheduled to be completed by August 2022 and the school in November of that year.
"Obviously they are currently doing quite a bit of earth moving work and that's weather-dependent, but at this point they have not been delayed enough to extend the deadline," he said. "There's still a number of months that something could happen, but as of right now they are working very diligently according to the schedule that they have established."
"They're getting ready to work with the footers and the foundation here in the next couple weeks and that's right on schedule," he added.
Hack said that as the district formulates the 2022-23 calendar, they will assess where the progress of the project is at that point and will be able to better determine when students will actually begin moving into the new school facility. Students in K-4 are expected to move to the facility first with other grades following at later dates, according to the district.
In 2019, the Warrior Run School Board approved the proposed design for the project, which included a three-story elementary school for students in grades K-6. The 99,000-square-foot facility will be able to accommodate 700 to 850 students.
According to information released about the project, the first level of the building will house kindergarten, with grades 1-3 on the second level and 4-6 on the third level. The maximum project cost is $37 million and the maximum construction cost for the elementary school building is $28.8 million.
The plans also include a music suite, gymnasium/cafeteria, library and flex space as well as administrative offices on the first floor of the elementary school structure. The second floor will have art and STEM learning spaces and small group intervention rooms. The stadium portion of the project will have artificial turf and an all-weather track. It will host football, soccer and field hockey games.
The construction of the school and the stadium are being done in tandem, Hack said, so the stadium should be ready for the fall 2022 sports season.
Following a feasibility study done in 2014, it was determined that it would be more cost effective to build a new consolidated elementary school instead of renovating existing buildings.
