Fireworks extravaganza returns to Williamsport

Once again, Fourth of July fireworks will light up the skies over the city of Williamsport.
"We have been doing it a lot of years and we are looking forward to doing it again," said Van Michael, owner of Backyard Broadcasting, the chief sponsor of the event.
Fireworks are set to go off at 9:40 p.m. Sunday, July 4, but the day will also include a downtown celebration with food, vendors and other activities in the area around the Market Street bridge.
Uptown Music Collective and area bands will provide entertainment. UPMC Susquehanna is the title sponsor.
Michael noted that barring severe weather, "it's pretty much a rain or shine event."
"This is the 26th year," he said. "Everybody is looking forward to getting out."
He said he's excited to have the fireworks display back in the city. Last year, the fireworks were set off at the county fairgrounds in Hughesville.
"We struggled with the permit situation last year," Michael said.
He gave city officials credit for working to ensure the event came off next month in Williamsport.
A petition filed with PennDOT to close the Market Street Bridge was initially denied.
"The city petitioned for a waiver. The waiver was granted by the governor's office," Michael explained.
Added Williamsport Mayor Derek Slaughter: "We got final approval from the state this (Thursday) morning."
The fireworks are viewed by thousands of people every year.
"It is best to come downtown to view the fireworks," Michael said.
