Demolition derby rouses Lycoming County Fair crowd

The Saturday Night Showdown started the Lycoming County Fair Motorsports’ lineup with a quite literal bang.

The four- and six-cylinder team demolition derby consisted of 18 teams competing in nine heats, all in the pursuit of a cash prize. Three-car squads crowded into the small area inside rows of large concrete blocks and lived up to the event’s name by crashing into each other in front of the packed crowd.

At the top of each heat, the crowd counted down from 10 to signal to the drivers when to begin. The souped-up cars would then roar to life and commence to smashing into each other, flinging mud and entertaining the audience.

Quite a few drivers are seasoned derby participants.

Alexis, Gus and Michael of War Pigs had all competed in individual derbies before, but this was their first year on a team.

Alexis said that demolition derbies are a tradition in her family, so she continues to carry that torch.

Chris of Team Unknown had never done a derby at the Lycoming County Fair, but he had competed in eight so far just this year.

He said he likes doing derbies because “the adrenaline rush really clears your head.”

Firefighters from Picture Rocks and Muncy Fire departments were on stand-by throughout the event.

Monday night will see the Mountain Creek Truck Fest’s Unlimited Tough Truck Racing at 7 p.m. The final Lycoming County Fair Motorsports events this year — Figure 8 Racing, Youth Derby and Chain & Bang Derby — start Thursday at 7 p.m. in the Grandstand. Tickets are $10.
