The Uptown Music Collective, a nonprofit school of music, held their annual Summer Music Festival on Saturday at Brandon Park, featuring performances by young, local musicians.
The day-long event had multiple food venders, as well as a raffle to win a new electric guitar.
"It's a free event that we do to try and get out in the community. …It's a nice, family friendly day in the park," said Jared Mondell, assistant executive director of The Uptown Music Collective.
The Uptown Music Collective has a variety of music groups, with different levels of experience. The event is meant to help give younger musicians a chance to perform in the community. The older, more experienced musicians also perform, backing up the new performers.
"This is the longest standing event that the Collective does. We've been doing this for almost 20-plus years. This is a showcase for our younger students to get out and play -- mixed in with some of our community performance kids, some of our older kids," said Mondell.
The festival has a variety of music groups, with genres ranging from 60s, 70s and 80s classic rock to blues music, modern music and more.
"There's different groups playing throughout the day. A lot of it is students learn songs, they spend a lot of time working on their songs, and then they put a band together to perform here," said Dominic Fredin, 18, recent graduate from Montoursville Area High School.
Fredin plays guitar and sings for the The Voodoo Street Blues Band. The band is one of many that are a part of the collective.
"We're all in different bands, but we're all a part of the same group," said Fredin.
The nonprofit school does events throughout the community, including playing gigs at the Community Arts Center.
