Bridge collapse near Pennsdale affects residents
MIKE REUTHER/Sun-Gazette Rains washed out a bridge near Pennsdale, leaving residents of Carpenter’s Lane struggling to leave their neighborhood.
The rains this week have left several homes in Lycoming County nearly stranded and a state park in Tioga County closed.
A bridge collapse this week over a small stream near the village of Pennsdale has left a number of area residents without their usual route to and from their properties.
People in eight homes reportedly use the bridge along Carpenter’s Lane, which collapsed Monday evening due to flooding.
The Muncy Township bridge, located just off Quaker Church Road, is expected to be replaced with a new span by early next week.
Some residents were using a temporary dirt road to get back and forth from their homes.
However, muddy conditions reportedly made it difficult to impossible for others to navigate the makeshift road, leaving them stranded at their residences.
A “Road Closed” sign flanked by orange highway cones has been placed on Carpenter’s Lane at the washed-out bridge area several feet from the creek.
Leonard Harrison State Park officials announced Thursday that the park along Route 660 near Wellsboro was closed due to flooding and storm damage to a section of state Route 660. Officials said Leonard Harrison, located about 10 miles from Wellsboro, will reopen by the end of next week and also said anyone who wants to visit the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon can go to Colton Point State Park at 927 Colton Road, Wellsboro. It is open and sits on the canyon’s west rim.
