JERSEY SHORE -- The Jersey Shore Area School Board this week revised its health and safety plan to allow students and staff who were in contact with a person positive for COVID-19 to remain in school if they are asymptomatic.
Previously, those who came in contact with infected people but were asymptomatic were forced to quarantine, which Ulmer noted has led to disruptions in education.
The amendment to the plan goes into effect immediately.
In explaining the new language in the plan, Superintendent Brian Ulmer said, "We are following what is strictly in the law."
He said the district will still be required to notify the Department of Education of any positive COVID-19 infections in the district and to isolate those with symptoms.
The original motion called for the board to have the revision to the plan go into effect Jan. 3.
However, the board voted unanimously for the revised language to take effect right away.
In other matters, the board approved an agreement with SitelogIQ Energy Services to purchase equipment for mechanical upgrades to improve energy efficiency at the high school.
The contract, not to exceed $1.11 million, is contingent upon approval by the district solicitor.
The project, which involved a study to consider equipment selection and costs, is to get under way in the coming summer.
It will include replacement of boilers, air handling units and ventilators, and address rooftop needs.
