Council expands budget work time

Williamsport City Council expanded the time it has to work on the 2023 proposed budget.

In a vote of 6-0 Thursday, with Councilwoman Liz Miele absent, council approved changes that make Nov. 3 the first meeting and add budget work sessions on Nov. 14 and Nov. 16.

The change was driven by Council President Adam Yoder.

It gives roughly a six-week process, he said.

It adds time for coming up with solutions and eliminates a prior time constraint for the council as it is presented a proposed budget by the mayor.

“I like the idea,” Councilman Randall J. Allison said. “As always, the devil is in the details.”

The December meetings would be as normal, and special sessions can be called to address any issues.

To accompany the change, Mayor Derek Slaughter said he is working on getting council updated financial software to assist them in the budget process and throughout the year.
