An Amish family of nine was riding along in their horse-drawn buggy on Route 44 when a passenger car came up behind and plowed right into them about 1:50 p.m. Sunday, injuring four of them, none seriously, according to state police. All nine family members were thrown out of the buggy, which was demolished by the impact, Nippenose Valley fire officials said. State police said both vehicles were traveling north on Route 44 when the collision occurred at Shed Road. A witness ran into the Dollar General Store to get help. A Nippenose Valley volunteer firefighter happened to be in the store and immediately alerted a dispatcher on his radio. Ambulances from Jersey Shore, DuBoistown and UPMC Williamsport were dispatched to the scene. Four family members -- the father and mother as well as two children -- were taken to area hospitals for what appeared to be non-life threatening injuries, police said. The woman driving the car was not hurt, and neither was the horse, officials said.
