Creating the Future: Union County business a seamstress paradise
Hoover’s Bernina Sewing is a Union County-based business known for its sales and service of sewing machines and much more.
“We repair all brands of machines,” store owner Leon Hoover said. âWe carry lots of fabric and embroidery supplies.”
The family-owned business at 2282 Beaver Road, Mifflinburg, was launched in 1987.
Hoover said it’s a busy place and well-known throughout the area.
“My parents started the business and now my children are involved,” he said.
Hoover said service to customers and making them happy are what’s important.
He carries out that mission by taking care of their needs.
“We are not just selling them a machine. If they have a problem, we are here for them,” he said.
The loyal customer base is important.
“We do some mail-order business,” he said.
Hoover said the business has been growing
In 2010, a new building was erected, expanding Hoover’s from 7,000-square feet to more than 10,000-square feet.
Many people find out about the business through word of mouth.
“We do a lot of sewing classes,” Hoover said.
Among the more popular classes is quilt making.
Next month, Hooverás will present a special education program as part of its Spring Fling event with renowned quilter Amanda Murphy at the Rusty Rail in Mifflinburg.
“Five classrooms will be going at the same time,” Hoover said. “You learn a lot of things in those three days.”
The event is set for April 12, 13, and 14.
The store’s quilting fabric line offerings include Hoffman, Benertex, Moda, Henry Glass, and Blank Quilting Corporation.
In addition, there are cotton quilting fabric, poly-cotton blends, flannel, and 108-inch-wide backing.
Items not in stock at the store can be ordered.
