Newberry streets could be vacated to help prevent illegal dumping

Two city streets in Newberry are closer today to being vacated by the city so a resident can place a fence or a gate there to stop illegal trash dumping in the area.

The West End resident asked for the streets to be cleared in the form of an ordinance for portions of Poplar Street and Webb Street so he can put a gate or a fence in to prevent trash from being dumped, said Gary Knarr, city zoning administrator.

The ordinance, if approved on Thursday by council, would be on Poplar Street to West Third Street and Webb Street from Trenton Place to Poplar Street.

It’s not going to impede the flow of any traffic. People can go to Trenton Place and Poplar Street, and it will help to prevent the dumping nuisance, Knarr explained.

The request was reviewed by the city planning commission, Norm Lubin, city solicitor, and Jon Sander, city engineer.

Starting at $2.99/week.
