By the beginning of this summer, e-commerce giant Amazon is expected to set up operations in Lycoming County.

Amazon spokesman Steve Kelly confirmed this week that a delivery station employing about 100 people will open along Saegers Station Road in Clinton Township.

"It's an Amazon delivery station," he said. "They represent the third and final journey of an Amazon product. It's where the customers' orders are loaded onto Amazon vans and delivered to homes."

Kelly said the local facility will be like many of the other delivery stations established by the company.

"Delivery stations generally employ about 100 people. Larger ones can employ a lot more," he said. "The part-time employees, who will make up most of the workforce, are able to take advantage of our flexible scheduling program which allows them to craft a schedule that works best for them and their lives."

Delivery stations are generally set up where there exists a local demand for customers.

Clinton Township Supervisor Chairman Pat Deitrick noted that the company will be housed in a former warehouse owned by Spring Windows Fashions being retrofitted to accommodate Amazon's operations.

"It's been rented out to different companies," he said.

Deitrick said he has not heard from Amazon officials in recent months about the facility but has been well aware of ongoing construction at the site.

"I expect that it will be up and running later this spring, possibly early summer," Kelly said. "Dates are fluid."

Amazon reportedly employs about 1.3 million people worldwide, including some 950,000 in the U.S, according to businessinsider.com.

One of every 153 employed workers in the U.S. works for Amazon.
