For all of you who thought winter weather was in the rearview mirror, a look outside your window this morning was a testimony to just how fickle Mother Nature can be.
"Not very common," was how Charles Ross, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service at State College, described the weather event.
But, be assured, this is just a "short term blip" according to Ross, with a warming in temperatures coming almost immediately and above-normal temperatures arriving for the upcoming weekend.
"If someone wants to get out and move the snow around with their shovel, that's fine, but it's going to melt right away," Ross said of the 2 to 4 inches of the wet, slushy snow that were predicted to fall.
"It's a snow you really don't have to worry about this time of year," he said, adding that if it had fallen in January it would be a different story.
The lowest total snowfall recorded in April in the Williamsport area is 1.5 inches in 1928. The highest amount, 13 inches, was recorded on April 11, 1894.
The recent snowy weather can be blamed on cold air, which is still lingering in Canada and had brought winter-like weather to the Northeast last week, Ross said.
Even though temperatures in the area flirted with freezing overnight, with a low of 32, Ross said that there are no unusually cold temperatures in the forecast.
Temperatures today are predicted to be around 45, which should speed up the melting of the snow, and ensure that any precipitation that might fall will be of the liquid variety. Tonight's low temperature should stay around 35 degrees.
By mid-week temperatures will be in the mid-to-upper 50's and 60's with Sunday topping out in the 70's and partly sunny.
"We're headed back to the normal spring weather," Ross said.
