Those who have been married or baptized in the Little Chapel of the Good Shepherd, or who may have experienced other special moments there, are asked to share their precious memories with Messiah Lutheran Church in preparation for a special celebration.

The church, 324 S. Howard St., South Williamsport, will rededicate its chapel to celebrate the completion of recent renovations after its 9:30 a.m. service on Sunday, May 15.

Anyone who would like to share a memory is asked to call the church office at 570-326-9171.

According to a brief history compiled by Wilma L. Reeder, the chapel began as a children’s chapel attached to the main church building, dedicated in 1890. It was expanded in 1895, and an addition was built in 1910 due to growing membership.

A new children’s chapel was constructed then. A cathedral window depicting Christ as the Good Shepherd was gifted by W.D. Crooks, as well as two of the windows at the rear of the chapel — “Christ Blessing the Children” and “Flight to Egypt.” The remaining windows were gifts of individuals and classes in the Sunday school, according to Reeder’s research.

The addition and new chapel cost nearly $14,000 at the time, or about $423,000 today, Reeder wrote.

Over the years, the chapel was continually transformed to be a charming and inviting place of worship with the addition of pews, watched over by the Good Shepherd.

On Oct. 11, 1942, the newly named chapel was completed upon the addition of an organ, and was dedicated “to the glory of God and in loving memory of Isabelle Diener Hurr by her son John H. Hurr,” according to Reeder’s research.

Starting at $3.90/week.
