Weather for today's July Fourth holiday will be ideal for cookouts, picnics and other outdoor gatherings with family and friends, according to David Martin, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in State College.
"It is looking really good with high temperatures being in the mid-80s. The humidity will stay reasonably low. We're not seeing any threat of thunderstorms. That is really nice because we've had thunderstorms on the Fourth in past years," Martin said. "We've had rain, high humidity, and we're not seeing any of that this year."
Recently Blast I.U. 17 held its annual patriotic Fourth of July parade, and this week will bring favorite annual events like Jersey Shore Town Meeting and Williamsport's Set the Night to Music. Both events kick off today.
Downtown, the festivities will start at 10 a.m. with the raising and flying of the world's largest American Flag. The Jersey Shore Town Meeting will start with the Tiadaghton Elm Ceremony at 9 a.m. on the stage. Both events will feature live music and food vendors.
After the performance of the national anthem by Achording to Dad, a fireworks display will take over the sky in Williamsport. Jersey Shore's firework display will take place on Saturday at 9:45 p.m.
Tuesday afternoon, a warm front from the midwest is expected to bring showers that will last into the night. The chance of rain will be 60%, but that will drop down to 30% by mid-week, Martin said.
In addition to having an umbrella, one should "keep an eye in the sky for any change in conditions," Martin said, adding that there is "nothing extreme" in the forecast.
"The bulk of the showers should be out of the area and heading east by Wednesday morning, but we still can't rule out a stray shower in the afternoon," he said. There will be a mixture of sun and clouds into the weekend, he added.
Temperatures all week will range within the mid-80s while overnight lows will range from lower 50s to mid-60s.
