Church bells will be ringing in unison with the rumble of thousands of motorcycles for the 21st anniversary motorcycle ride to remember the 3,000 victims of Sept. 11, 2001, organizers say.

Individuals with Trinity Episcopal and Christ Episcopal Churches along West Fourth Street said they will be ringing bells as the motorcyclists make their way through Williamsport.

This year’s theme is “Let Freedom Roar,” a reference to the sound that these motorcycles make that Sunday afternoon.

Riders will make good on a promise to “Never Forget,” said Tank Baird, coalition president.

For more than two decades, the rolling memorial has been dedicated to those that lost their lives that day and for those who have sacrificed in the war against terrorism.

In Lycoming County communities, streets and side lots, front lawns and businesses are lined with fellow patriots waving flags, waving at the riders.

“The emotional response, signs and flags along the route tend to restore your faith in America,” said Casey Parker, a coalition member.

A recent Public Broadcasting Service documentary “Remember Honor Ride” which was about the organic growth of the event and number of participating riders is indicative that America is still hurting, according to Clinton Township Volunteer Fire Co. Chief Todd Winder.

The ride starts and concludes at the Clinton Township fire

station on Route 54 near Montgomery. Gates open at 10 a.m., with a memorial service at 2 p.m. and the ride at 3 p.m.

Donations are appreciated. Riders and non-riders may attend the memorial service.

Food vendors will be at the department grounds before and after the ride. Pepper Street, a band, is scheduled to perform after the ride, during a time of fellowship and reflection that has become a tradition for the event.
